Aetna to pay $17 million settlement after revealing HIV status of some customers

Aetna will pay a $17 million settlement following claims that it breached the privacy of customers who take HIV medications.

The settlement comes six months after Aetna, the third-largest health insurer in the U.S., mailed notices in July that accidentally revealed the recipients were prescribed HIV medications.

{mosads}The information was visible through the large, transparent windows on the front of the envelopes.

The envelopes were sent to 12,000 customers in at least 23 states.

Aetna will pay at least $500 to customers whose privacy was breached.

Customers who were affected filed a class-action lawsuit against the company in August.
