Majority says vaping ban would drive consumers to black market: poll

More than half of consumers in a new poll believe that a ban on vaping devices would merely drive Americans to an unregulated black market. 

USA Today reported Wednesday that a survey conducted by the newspaper and Ipsos polling found that 59 percent of Americans polled, including 82 percent of those who say they use e-cigarettes regularly, believe that a ban on vaping products would drive consumers to purchase from unlicensed dealers.

{mosads}On top of that, 72 percent of respondents who use e-cigarettes said government regulations would not reduce the overall number of Americans who use vaping products.

Still, when asked about an overall ban, 47 percent of Americans polled said they would definitely support such a measure in some regard, while just 28 percent said that they definitely opposed a ban.

Sixty-four percent of respondents ages 55 and up support a ban, while support for the measure is much lower but still prevalent — 32 percent — among those ages 18-34.

When it comes to banning flavored tobacco vape products, more than half of respondents, 52 percent, support such a measure, while 20 percent of vape users polled were in support.

The USA Today/Ipsos poll surveyed about 1,006 adults from the U.S., including 67 who said they vaped regularly. The survey had a credibility interval of 3.5 percentage points.
