The Utah Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell has tested positive for coronavirus a day after the team confirmed that Mitchell’s teammate Rudy Gobert had also tested positive, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday.
“Jazz players privately say that Rudy Gobert had been careless in the locker room touching other players and their belongings. Now a Jazz teammate has tested positive,” Wojnarowski added in a tweet.
Shortly after Gobert’s test results were reported, footage went viral of him jokingly touching microphones and cellphones in front of him during a press conference days before the test.
The NBA announced Wednesday night that the season would be suspended until further notice in the wake of Gobert testing positive.
“The test result was reported shortly prior to the tip-off of tonight’s game between the Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena. At that time, tonight’s game was canceled. The affected player was not in the arena,” the NBA said in a statement Wednesday.
“The NBA is suspending game play following the conclusion of tonight’s schedule of games until further notice,” the league added. “The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.”
The NBA became the first sports league to suspend play due to the virus as the NHL, NCAA, MLB and MLS discuss measures to take amid the outbreak.
The NCAA announced on Wednesday that both the men’s and women’s March Madness tournaments would be played in nearly empty arenas.
