Do you know the muffin ban? Recall affects 26 products nationwide

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Give & Go Prepared Foods Corp. on Monday announced a voluntary recall of 26 muffin and muffin-related products available nationwide over concerns of possible listeria contamination.

An environmental monitoring program alerted the company to the potential problem with the items, which are  sold in Walmart, 7-Eleven, Stop & Shop and other stores.

A list of all the recalled products, which include muffins packaged under labels such The Worthy Crumb and Uncle Wally’s, can be found on the FDA’s website. 

Give & Go says it has received no reports of illness regarding the possible contamination but is “taking this action out of an abundance of caution.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pregnant women and their newborns, older adults and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk of serious or fatal infections after eating food contaminated with the listeria germ. The agency estimates that 1,600 people in the U.S. get listeriosis each year, and 260 die from it.

Give & Go said that some healthy individuals can also feel short-term side effects such as stiffness, nausea and abdominal pain. 

“Consumers who have these products should immediately dispose of the products and not eat them. Consumers should make a note of the lot code of the products, which is found on the label, and provide it if they contact us,” the company said in a statement.
