Tuesday’s developments don’t mean the issue is dead forever. But stakeholders listening to the call interpreted McCarty’s comments as the end of the debate.

“They don’t have a history of endorsing federal legislation, and they do have a history of trying to work within a consensus model,” said Ethan Rome, executive director of Health Care for America Now. “This is too divisive of an issue.”
