Poll: Nearly 90 percent say they are practicing social distancing ‘as much as possible’

The vast majority of Americans are practicing social distancing the best they can during the coronavirus outbreak, the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll finds.

In the poll, 93 percent of Americans surveyed said that they were “maintaining distance from other people” and 91 percent said that they were “staying home as much as possible.”

Additionally, 88 percent said that they’ve stopped going to bars and restaurants and 61 percent said that they had stocked up on food and household supplies.

COVID-19 has largely ground day-to-day life in the U.S. to a halt. Many states have closed schools, restaurants, bars and other places of leisure during the outbreak. Several states have issued “shelter in place” orders, which further restrict Americans’ movement. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released social distancing guidelines and the White House last week recommended social distancing for 15 days and strongly discouraged people from gathering in groups of more than 10.

There are more than 86,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins University, giving the U.S. the most confirmed cases in the world.

The poll surveyed 1,003 adults between March 22-25 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
