The truce, which some rebel groups said they will respect, coincides with the four-day Eid al-Adha holiday that starts Thursday. Brahimi said he hopes the temporary cease-fire can help build momentum for a resolution to a civil war that has left more than 30,000 dead over the past 19 months.
{mosads}Brahimi made the announcement in Cairo after returning from a visit to Damascus, Reuters reports. Assad is expected to formally announce his agreement and provide more details about when it would start Wednesday or Thursday.
“If this humble initiative succeeds,” Brahimi said, “we hope that we can build on it in order to discuss a longer and more effective cease-fire, and this has to be part of a comprehensive political process.”
