Senate to move on foreign aid nominee

The Senate Foreign Relations panel is scheduled to hold a hearing Tuesday on President Obama’s nominee to lead the Millennium Challenge Corp., paving the way for what should be an easy confirmation.

The president tapped Dana Hyde to be the CEO of the independent foreign aid agency in September. The agency has approved more than $8.4 billion in grants since its creation in 2004.

Hyde has served as the associate director for general government programs at the Office of Management and Budget since 2011. She was previously a senior adviser for management and resources at the State Department.

The MCC was created under President George W. Bush to function independently of the larger U.S. Agency for International Development. The agency awards aid grants to countries based on their support for free-market principles and other measures Washington considers good for development.
