Americans flocking to Syria
Dozens of Americans have flocked to Syria to battle Bashar Assad’s regime over the past two years, The New York Times reports.
The relative handful of fighters have raised concerns among intelligence officials about their possible radicalization abroad, intelligence officials told reporters at a background briefing on foreigners fighting in Syria. About 600 of the 6,000 to 11,000 foreigners fighting in Syria are believed to come from western countries, mostly in Europe.
“It’s a very steady increase,” a senior American intelligence official told the Times, “and I expect that to continue as long as the fighting there continues.”
