Poll: Most view Russia as unfriendly or enemy

Nearly seven in 10 people consider Russia either unfriendly toward the United States or an outright enemy, according to a new poll. 

The Gallup survey released Thursday finds 44 percent view Russia as unfriendly toward the United States, while 24 percent see the country as an enemy. 

{mosads}The number has spiked sharply since Russia annexed Crimea, formerly part of Ukraine, after increasing its troop presence in the region last month. The United States has called the annexation a violation of international law and imposed a number of sanctions on Russian and Crimean officials. 

The last time the question was polled, in September 2013, 50 percent of people saw Russia as unfriendly or an enemy. The number of people who call Russia an enemy increased 8 points, while those calling it unfriendly rose 10 percent. 

Another 21 percent of people call the relationship between Russia and the United States friendly, while 5 percent call the country an ally. 

The U.S. view of Russian President Vladimir Putin has also bottomed out. His favorability rating in the United States has dropped to 9 percent, down 10 points since February. 

The poll surveyed 1,012 people from March 22-24 and has a 4-percentage-point margin of error.
