Egypt court drops murder charges against Mubarak
A court in Egypt threw out charges Saturday against former President Honsi Mubarak over the killing of more than 200 protesters during the “Arab Spring” uprising that ended his decades-long rule.
{mosads}The decision to dismiss the charges, along with others over public corruption, was read by a judge in a Cairo courtroom and closed a nearly four-year legal battle that saw Mubarak sentenced to life in prison in 2012, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Mubarak, 86, is serving a separate three-year sentence for embezzlement of public funds.
Mubarak and several others, including one of his cabinet officials, had been convicted of conspiracy to kill protesters and were sentenced to life in prison in June 2012, but a retrial was ordered last year on a technicality.
In addition to the murder charge, Mubarak was also cleared of a corruption charge involving gas exports to Israel.
His two sons were also cleared of separate corruption charges by the same court on Saturday.
