Scores of Boko Haram terrorists were killed and 20 women and children were rescued Saturday, according to the Nigerian military.
The military touted Saturday’s operation as more progress against Boko Haram as it seeks to drive the extremist group from its remaining stronghold in Nigeria’s northeast regions.
{mosads}”Troops have forged ahead with the ongoing offensive operations as scores of the terrorists died in the assault on their bases,” said Nigerian military spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade, according to Reuters.
The radical Islamist group gained worldwide attention last year when it kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok.
The U.S. sent a team of military and law enforcement personnel to assist in the search last spring.
The Nigerian military has freed more than 700 women captured by Boko Haram in recent weeks, but none of them included the Chibok schoolgirls, according to Reuters. The military did not say whether any of the women and girls rescued Saturday were among the group.
Boko Haram has kidnapped more than 2,000 women and girls in the past year, according to CNN.
