Supreme leader: Iran won’t again bargain with ‘Great Satan’
Iran’s supreme leader is vowing that Tehran will never negotiate with the United States following the historic nuclear agreement reached this summer, again calling the U.S. the “Great Satan.”
{mosads}Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that he also rejects the idea of greater warmth toward America.
“[Iran] did not and will not hold talks with [the United States] on issues other than nuclear negotiations,” he said on Iran’s Press TV, according to CNN.
“I have not authorized negotiations, and [we] will not hold talks with them,” Khamenei said of Iran’s future interactions with American leadership.
“We agreed to hold talks with America only on the nuclear issue and for particular reasons, and thank God, our negotiators did a good job,” the ayatollah added.
The Obama administration’s agreement with Tehran eases economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for greater restrictions on its nuclear program.
President Obama scored a major political victory on Tuesday by securing the support of 42 Democratic senators in favor of the accord.
Their backing ensures Obama has enough votes for blocking a resolution of disapproval should one pass the Senate.
Khamenei said on Wednesday that he is not treating economic sanctions relief as an olive branch from the U.S. and its allies.
“Some people insist on disguising this Great Satan as the savior angel,” Khamenei said, using his long-time epithet for the U.S.
“The Iranian nation expelled this Satan [from Iran],” he added. “We must not allow [its return] when we expelled it through the door, [given] it could gain influence [again] through the window.”
