Obama ends Mideast tour with visit to Petra

{mosads}The tourist attraction received an influx of attention when it was featured in the “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” movie in 1989.

Obama is traveling back to Washington D.C. on Saturday after spending four days visiting with leaders in Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan.

Aiming to reassure the countries of the United States’ continued support, Obama met with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. One of the only tangible diplomatic results to come of the visit came when Netanyahu called the Turkish Prime Minister to apologize for the death of eight Turks in military operation to enforce the embargo on Gaza.

But the president’s visit was well-received by Israeli leaders, with Obama relieving tensions with Netanyahu after frosty relations during his first term.

The call — which Obama helped broker just before he boarded a plane for Jordan — restored diplomatic contact between Israel and Turkey after a three-year freeze.

Obama returns to an emptier Washington, as Capitol Hill lawmakers have traveled home to their states for the Easter recess break.
