Egypt blasts US warning on security at the pyramids

Egyptian officials criticized a warning from the U.S. Embassy urging caution at the pyramids because of a “lack of visible security or police” there.

An Egyptian statement quoted by the Associated Press called the pyramids in Giza, a world-renowned tourist attraction, “totally secure” and called the U.S. warning “baseless.”

Tourism throughout Egypt declined following the 2011 revolution that toppled Hosni Mubarak, who had ruled the country for decades. 

{mosads}U.S. officials had warned of over-aggressive vendors and “angry groups of individuals surrounding and pounding on vehicles.”

“U.S. citizens should elevate their situational awareness when traveling to the Pyramids, avoid any late evening or night travel, utilize a recommended or trusted guide, and closely guard valuables,” the warning added.
