Pakistan demands meeting with US officials after alleged drone strike

Officials in Pakistan are requesting an official explanation from the U.S. embassy about an alleged drone strike in the country that killed several people.

{mosads}“It was conveyed to the U.S. that the Government of Pakistan strongly condemns the drone strikes which are a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” wrote Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry in a statement. “The importance of bringing an immediate end to the drone strikes was emphasized.”

The attack occurred on Friday night in a tribal area of Pakistan, according to The Washington Post, less than two weeks after a U.S. military strike against Wali ur-Rehman, second in command of the Pakistani Taliban, The identities of those killed have not yet been revealed.

The U.S. Embassy’s charge d’affaires, Richard E. Hoagland had been requested to meet with Pakistan’s minister of state for foreign affairs, Tariq Fatemi, the ministry said.

Pakistan’s newly elected prime minister warned American officials about continuing with the drone program on Wednesday, according to the Post. Nawaz Sharif said that it threatened the country’s sovereignty, but also emphasized maintaining a working relationship with the United States.
