Obama administration: Mail talks with Cuba ‘not a signal of anything’ bigger

“This is something that the U.S. has felt would be a positive step for the Cuban people,” Psaki said. “We felt it was in our interest.”

Obama lifted travel and remittance restrictions on Cuban-Americans during his first term but kept in place most of the elements of the decades-old U.S. embargo. The State Department kept its designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism in its latest annual report, released last month.
