Benghazi suspect says he’s ‘having a normal life,’ denies charges

The Libyan militia commander charged with involvement in the attack that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans denied all accusations when speaking with The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Ahmed Abu Khattala, who has been called a leader in the militia group Ansar al-Sharia, was one of several people named in a sealed complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court, according to government officials.

{mosads}However, Khattala told the AP that he had never been questioned by Libyan authorities and was only “having a normal life” in Benghazi. He claimed to have quit the militia and become a construction contractor.

“I am a Libyan citizen, and the American government has nothing to do with me,” Khattala said. “If they have an inquiry to make, they should get in touch with Libyan authorities.”

Khattala has been associated with the attack for some time, as a witness has identified him as a figure leading troops at the scene. Last October, Khattala told Reuters that while he was present near the U.S. compound during the attack, he arrived after gunfire began and only came “to see what was happening.”
