Trump, Japanese PM set up meeting in DC for Feb. 10
President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke by phone Saturday about the future of U.S.-Japan relations and agreed to meet in Washington next month.
“President Trump and Prime Minister Abe spoke on the phone today to discuss the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance and cooperation on regional and global issues,” the White House said in a readout of the call.
“President Trump affirmed the ironclad U.S. commitment to ensuring the security of Japan,” the White House added.
{mosads}Trump and Abe also discussed issues concerning regional security and an upcoming visit by Secretary of Defense James Mattis. And the leaders agreed to cooperate on addressing the geopolitical threat of North Korea and expanding bilateral trade opportunities.
“The two leaders discussed the significance of Secretary of Defense Mattis’s upcoming visit to the region, including Japan,” the White House wrote.
“President Trump and Prime Minister Abe said they would consult and cooperate on the threat posed by North Korea. The two leaders also committed to deepen the bilateral trade and investment relationship.”
Trump and Abe are set to meet in Washington on Feb. 10.
