British Parliament recalled to debate, vote on Syria military action

British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday recalled Parliament to debate military options against Syria and said the country was considering a “proportionate response” to the “absolutely abhorrent” chemical weapons attack.

{mosads}Cameron announced the return of Parliament on Twitter. He said the Speaker of the House of Commons had agreed to his request to recall Parliament. British MPs would convene Thursday to debate “a clear Govt motion and vote on UK response to chemical weapons attacks,” Cameron wrote.

According to Reuters, Cameron’s spokesman said that British armed forces were “making contingency plans” and that while a military response was on the table, the country had not committed to such an action yet.

The spokesman also said that whatever response Cameron decided on would “be taken under a strict international framework,” and that Cameron would be talking with other world leaders throughout the next few days to ensure a coordinated response.

Cameron’s statement follows a statement by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, which many believe suggests the U.S. is preparing some kind of military intervention against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime.
