ISIS claims responsibility for attack on police officers in Paris

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for a shooting near the Champs-Élysées in Paris left at least one police officer dead Thursday.

The Associated Press reported that the attacker was also killed.

Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert told the AP that the shooter targeted police near the Franklin Roosevelt subway station.

One officer was reportedly killed and another seriously injured.

A counterterrorism inquiry has been opened, Reuters reported, and after an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon, President Francois Hollande said that the attack appeared to be terror-related.

The shooting comes just days before France holds its first round of voting in its presidential election. 

{mosads}France has experienced a rash terrorist acts in recent years, most notably in Paris in 2015, when a series of coordinated attacks left 130 people dead and hundreds more wounded.

Eighty-six people were also killed in an attack in Nice last year after a man drove a cargo truck through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day. That assault left more than 400 people injured.

Speaking at a news conference alongside Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, President Trump remarked on the news.

“Again, it is happening again,” Trump continued. “I just saw it as I was walking in, so that’s a terrible thing. It is a very, very terrible thing that’s going on in the world today, but it looks like another terrorist attack.”
