Theresa May says UK threat level will remain at ‘severe’
British Prime Minister Theresa May said Monday that the official threat level in the U.K. will remain at “severe.”
“JTAC, the independent joint terrorism analysis centre, have confirmed that the national threat level remains at severe, that means that a terrorist attack is highly likely,” she told the BBC.
“It is now clear that, sadly, victims came from a number of nationalities. This was an attack on London and the United Kingdom, but it was also an attack on the free world.”
{mosads}May’s comments follow an attack Saturday in London that left at least seven people dead and dozens more injured. The London attackers drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge, before stabbing other victims in the area.
On Sunday, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack.
This is the third terror attack the U.K. has faced in the recent months.
A truck plowed into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in March, and a suicide bomber targeted an Ariana Grande concert in the northern English city of Manchester two weeks ago.
May said over the weekend the recent attacks in the U.K. are linked together by the “single, evil ideology of Islamist extremism that preaches hatred, sows division and promotes sectarianism.”
