Trump to meet with Theresa May during G-20 summit: report

President Trump will hold a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany.

A United Kingdom government official confirmed the rendezvous to Reuters on Wednesday, though the official declined to say what the two leaders will discuss.

The Guardian reported that May plans to raise the issue of climate change with the president, and will tell him that she does not believe the Paris climate accord, which Trump announced the U.S. would withdraw from last month, will be renegotiated.

The meeting comes at a tumultuous time for May and the U.K.

The prime minister’s Conservative Party suffered dramatic losses in a June snap election that May herself called in order to strengthen her party’s majority going into Brexit negotiations with the European Union.

The losses ultimately cost the Conservatives their majority in Parliament and signaled a major blow to May’s leadership.

The U.K. has also suffered a series of deadly terrorist attacks since late May, when a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert in Manchester, England.

Less than two weeks later, a group of attackers rammed a van into a crowd of pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing several people at nearby Borough Market.

In a third attack on June 19, a man drove a van into a crowd of worshippers near a London mosque. One man died and several others were injured in the attack.

Trump also came under fire after trading barbs last month with London Mayor Sadiq Khan after the London Bridge attack. The president had suggested that the Khan was weak on terrorism and accused him of downplaying the severity of the attack.

May came to Khan’s defense in the dispute, saying he “is doing a good job and it’s wrong to say anything else.”

Trump is also set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin while he is in Germany for the G-20 summit.
