Iran: Demonstrators should ‘pay the price’ for breaking law

The Iranian government on Sunday threatened to hold protesters accountable as demonstrations against the government and economic conditions in the country continued for a fourth consecutive day.

“Those who damage public property, violate law and order and create unrest are responsible for their actions and should pay the price,” Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said, according to Reuters.

Another state official said some protesters had been arrested on Saturday, Reuters reported. 

Protesters have taken to the streets for each of the last four days throughout the country to protest economic hardships and alleged government corruption.

{mosads}Some protesters in the country’s capital reportedly chanted “death to Rouhani,” referring to Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, and “death to the dictator,” referring apparently to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

President Trump on Friday tweeted his support for the protests, adding that “the world is watching.” The Iranian government swiftly condemned the president’s remarks, calling them “deceitful and opportunist.”

The government also disabled access to some messaging apps within the country.
