South Korea president: Trump deserves ‘big credit’ for talks with North Korea
South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday that President Trump deserved “big credit” for kickstarting talks between North and South Korea.
“I think President Trump deserves big credit for bringing about the inter-Korean talks. I want to show my gratitude,” Moon said, according to Reuters.
“It could be a resulting work of the U.S.-led sanctions and pressure,” he added.
{mosads}The praise for Trump follows the first talks between Seoul and Pyongyang in roughly two years. The two countries agreed on Tuesday to further discussions to work through the issues between them.
North Korea has bucked the international community several times this past year by launching a series of intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The United Nations Security Council voted last month to impose sanctions aimed at strangling North Korea’s already isolated economy.
However, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un signaled during his New Year’s Day speech that he wanted his country to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
North Korea’s International Olympic Committee representative on Saturday said the country would likely send some athletes to the games.
Trump responded at a press conference, saying he would like to see North Korean athletes compete at the winter games.
