Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) said on Sunday that he would not refer to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as “honorable” as President Trump has, adding that Trump should just call Kim “Rocket Man.”
“I would never use the word honorable to describe Kim Jong Un,” Lankford said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“I think he’s better to just call him ‘Rocket Man’ and be able to stick with that than call him honorable just because he is a ruthless dictator that does public executions of anyone who disagrees.”
“The reason that everyone in North Korea agrees with him is because he kills anyone that disagrees with him,” Lankford added. “He has literally starved his own people to be able to help the elite.”
{mosads}Lankford’s comments come after Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in met in the Demilitarized Zone between the two nations, pledging to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and bring an official end to the Korean War.
It was recently announced that Kim would shut down his nuclear test site in the coming months and invite South Korean and American experts and journalists into the country.
Trump is expected to meet with Kim at a summit in the coming weeks. The date and location have yet to be announced.
“It’s entirely appropriate that we try to resolve this not just for North Korea but for the people of North Korea that have to live under this kind of dictatorship,” Lankford said on Sunday.
