The Iraqi government carried out an airstrike in Syria targeting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), according to Reuters.
The attacks were carried out south of the Syrian town of Deshaisha, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s office announced in a statement on Sunday obtained by Reuters.
{mosads}“The position was completely destroyed,” the office said in its statement.
Since last year, the Iraqi government has carried out a number of strikes against ISIS in Syria with the approval of the Syrian government and the U.S.-led coalition fighting the terrorist group.
The prime minister has said he would not hesitate to act if ISIS “[threatens] the security of Iraq.”
Just three years ago ISIS had control of over a third of Iraqi territory.
In December, al-Abadi declared victory over ISIS but the militant group continues to pose a threat from certain parts of the Iraqi border with Syria and by conducting terror attacks across Iraq.
