North Korean leader Kim Jong Un gave what is believed to be his first response to a foreign journalist during his closely watched meeting with President Trump on Thursday.
{mosads}The Washington Post’s David Nakamura asked Kim whether he felt confident about reaching a deal before a closed-door session on his nation’s nuclear program.
“It’s too early to tell. I won’t prejudge,” Kim said.
“From what I feel right now, I do have a feeling that good results will come,” he added.
The response not only marked the first time Kim engaged a member of America’s free press, but was also the first time the North Korean leader took a question from a foreign journalist, according to The Washington Post.
On Thursday, Trump and Kim went to the negotiating table for their second summit in an effort to reach an agreement on denuclearization.
The summit ended abruptly, however, without an agreement between the two nations.
“Sometimes you have to walk,” Trump said at a press conference in Hanoi, Vietnam. “This was just one of those times.”
The president told reporters that sanctions ended up being the sticking point during the talks.
“It was about the sanctions,” Trump said. “Basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that.”
