Macron eyes ‘more ambitious’ energy and climate law

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said Sunday that it will delay submitting a draft of an energy and climate law so that it can be reworked with more ambitious environmental goals.

Reuters reported Sunday that Macron’s planned proposals had drawn criticism from environmental groups who worried it was too vague in some of its goals.

The draft law is intended to serve as a broad framework for the country’s climate targets, with language on carbon emissions and reliance on nuclear energy.{mosads}

Despite the delay on the draft, Reuters reported that the final bill will still be sent to the lower house of parliament in June as previously planned.

Macron has pushed environmentally friendly policies during his roughly two years in office, with mixed reviews at home.

Intense protests ensued for weeks straight in Paris after Macron announced a planned fuel tax, with demonstrators vandalizing monuments and clashing with police, injuring more than 100 people.

The French government later delayed plans to implement the steep taxes on diesel fuel and gasoline as part of Macron’s effort to reduce emissions.
