UK Parliament fails to agree on alternative to May’s Brexit plan

The United Kingdom’s House of Commons on Monday rejected four alternative proposals to Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit proposal, according to media reports.

The plans lawmakers voted against included remaining in a customs union with the European Union, holding a new referendum about leaving the EU, remaining in the single market and not leaving the EU with a deal, according to the BBC.

{mosads}The proposal to remain in the customs union failed by just three votes.

The failed votes come after Parliament last week rejected, for a third time, a deal proposed by British Prime Minister Theresa May.

The UK was originally scheduled to leave the EU last month but was granted an extension until April 12, or May 22 if the government agreed to a deal, which it has not. Voters in the country in 2016 approved a measure to leave the EU but Parliament has struggled to come up with a plan to do so.

Guy Verhofstadt, the Brexit coordinator for the European Parliament, said in a tweet Monday that the UK will have a “last chance” on Wednesday to break a deadlock on Brexit. Votes have not yet been scheduled for Wednesday, according to Sky News.

“The House of Commons again votes against all options. A hard #Brexit becomes nearly inevitable. On Wednesday, the U.K. has a last chance to break the deadlock or face the abyss,” Verhofstadt said.
