Fox Business host calls pope ‘weak on the border wall’ and ‘socialism’

Fox Business Network host Elizabeth MacDonald said Monday that Pope Francis was “weak” when it came to his response to socialism and border walls. 

“When you see the pope making statements about a border wall, it has to be taken in the context of how the pope approaches all of Central America and South America,” MacDonald said while speaking on the network. 

“It’s very weak in his response to communism and socialism in the other parts of the world. And he is weak on the border wall as well.”

{mosads}MacDonald made the remarks just a day after Francis told reporters that those who construct border walls would “become prisoners of the walls they put up.” 

“This is history,” said Francis, who has admonished against hardline immigration policies in the past without using President Trump’s name. 

Fellow Fox Business Network host Stuart Varney interpreted the statement as a shot at Trump, with MacDonald chiming in that it’s another example of the pope getting “political.”

MacDonald later added that her point was that the pope is failing to criticize “the governments that cause these migrant outflows.”

“Right?” she asked. “That’s the issue. He’s not doing that. It’s after the fact refereeing.”

Francis made his comments about border walls while aboard a flight to Rome after a visit to Morocco. He added that he wept after being shown a piece of concertina wire from a border along Spain’s north African enclave of Ceuta, which borders Morocco. 

Trump has repeatedly advocated for a wall along the southern border since launching his 2016 presidential campaign. He declared a national emergency earlier this year to fund one after Congress passed a spending bill without the money he’d demanded for border security.
