North Korea: Kim oversaw tests of new weapon

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw tests of a new weapons system, the country announced Sunday.

The report from state media, obtained by the Associated Press, came just hours after President Trump said he would meet with Kim soon again to discuss denuclearization.

Trump tweeted that Kim had sent him a letter seeking a meeting to start negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang following the conclusion of the United States’s joint exercises with South Korea.

{mosads}He added that Kim apologized for testing short range missiles and claimed the “testing would stop when the exercises end.”

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday in a separate statement slammed South Korea for continuing to host military drills with the United States, according to AP.

Details given about the new weapons system were limited, except that the test was successful.

Kim expressed “great satisfaction” over the launches, per AP.

North Korea’s fifth round of weapons launches in less than three weeks, tests which analysts say are linked to the joint exercises between the U.S. and South Korea.

Trump last week downplayed the short-range missile launches, saying they were “very standard” and not a part of the framework agreement he made with Kim last year at their Singapore summit.
