Italy surpasses 8,000 coronavirus deaths

Italy has surpassed 8,000 coronavirus-related deaths, the country’s Civil Protection Agency announced Thursday.

Officials said that 683 people had died on Wednesday. Those deaths followed 743 reported on Tuesday, 602 on Monday, 650 on Sunday and a record 793 on Saturday — the highest daily figure since the virus was detected in the country in February.

The agency also reported the total number of confirmed cases is now 80,539, up from 74,386. More than a fourth of the cases are in Lombardy, a region in northern Italy. Officials said that 10,361 people have been healed in the country.

Italy has the highest amount of confirmed cases outside of China, followed by the United States in third.

The increasing figures come as the Italian government has taken aggressive action to enforce self-isolation in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.
