Romania surges past 100K coronavirus cases
Romania surged past 100,000 coronavirus cases on Friday as authorities are expected to extend a state of alert by another month.
The country of more than 19 million people has also reported 4,100 deaths, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis issued a strict lockdown in March, replacing it with a softer “alert mode” in May. The government now plans to extend that by another 30 days from Sept. 14, Reuters reported.
This comes as schools in the country are scheduled to open next Monday at about 70 percent capacity.
Worldwide, more than 28 million people have tested positive for the virus and more than 910,000 people have died, according to Johns Hopkins.
