Over 50 dead in Nigeria after boat sinks

More than 50 people are dead and dozens more are missing after a boat in Nigeria sank Wednesday.

Authorities said that the boat could have gone down due to an overload of passengers, according to a report from CNN.

The boat had at least 150 people onboard traveling from the Borgu district in Niger state to Kebbi, according to the news outlet.

The death toll rose to 53 people on Thursday after more passengers were found, Abdullahi Buhari, chairman of Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State, told CNN. Most of the passengers are believed to be traders.

However, it is unclear how many children have died.

The official added that 22 people were rescued and that after spending some time in the hospital, they had been released.

Niger State police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun warned people not to overload boats as the police believe the sinking was caused by too many people on the vessel.

This incident occurred a month after 53 died from a sunken submarine in Indonesia.
