Hong Kong policeman stabbed in ‘lone wolf’ attack
A Hong Kong policeman was stabbed on the anniversary of China’s rule over the city on Thursday.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang said the incident was a “local lone wolf terrorist attack,” Reuters reported.
Police have not released the name of the 50-year-old man who stabbed the officer in the back then stabbed himself in the chest in a murder and suicide mission.
The officer had a punctured lung and went into surgery, but his current condition is unknown. The attacker died an hour later in the hospital from stabbing himself.
The incident happened on a day authorities cracked down on the city to prevent any protests on the anniversary of China’s control of the region.
Police searched the attacker’s home and said his home and computer showed he was “radicalised,” according to Reuters.
Authorities did not say what they found on his computer or what they meant by radicalized.
Along with the attack, more than a dozen people were arrested on the anniversary for crimes such as “possession of an imitation firearm, possession of an offensive weapon, desecration of the national flag, distribution of seditious publications,” the government said.
“After going through months of riots in the second half of 2019, members of the public abhor violence and treasure very much the stability of society since the implementation of the National Security Law last year,” Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said.
The people of Hong Kong have continued to protest for Democracy as Beijing put the national security law on the city in response.
The national security law was recently used to shut down one of Hong Kong’s biggest pro-democracy newspapers.
