Trump holds call with Mexico’s president on border issues

President Trump discussed border security with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador over the phone Wednesday.

The president reported on Twitter that the conversation revolved around security of the southern border and “various other things of mutual interest for the people of our respective countries.”

Trump tweeted about the phone call hours after a Supreme Court decision to approve his request to implement a rule that is expected to reduce the number of immigrants coming from Central America.{mosads}

The new rule would require people traveling through another country to seek asylum in the United States to first seek asylum in that country.

The U.S. government threatened to place tariffs on Mexico if the country does not take action to prevent immigrants from getting to the border. This prompted the Mexican president to further empower the country’s National Guard and immigration service in June.
