South Korean envoys traveling to North Korea
South Korean officials will travel to North Korea this week for the first time in nearly a decade, according to multiple reports on Sunday.
South Korea’s national security director, Chung Eui-yong, will head the group of special envoys that are heading to Pyongyang for discussions over tensions on the Korean Peninsula, The Associated Press reported.
{mosads}The talks will focus on the nuclear issue, in addition to how North Korea can begin discussions with the United States, according to the news service.
South Korea last month said its northern neighbor was receptive to discussions with the United States.
But President Trump, who has publicly admonished North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said Saturday evening that Pyongyang must “denuke” prior to any talks with the United States.
North Korea in February reportedly invited its southern neighbor to discussions for the first time in more than 10 years.
Athletes from the two nations also marched together during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and athletes from the North and South played together on a unified hockey team during the games.
