Coronavirus cases rise more than 12,000 in one day in India

India’s number of new coronavirus cases spiked by nearly 13,000 on Thursday as health officials battle to contain its spread and fear a possible second wave.

Data from Johns Hopkins University analyzed by The Wall Street Journal indicated that the number of new cases, 12,881, represented India’s largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases.

India has seen 366,946 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 12,237 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins.

The news comes as neighboring China battles a second wave of infections that have forced authorities to lock down areas of Beijing. China first began battling the virus in late 2019 and early this year, when the outbreak is thought to have begun around the Chinese city of Wuhan.

States around the U.S. have begun to relax coronavirus-related restrictions and reopen nonessential businesses and pubic spaces, even as multiple states — including Texas and Arizona — see significant spikes.

South Carolina reported its highest number of new coronavirus cases for the fourth consecutive day earlier this week and now sits near 20,000 confirmed cases statewide as it continues trending upward. Other states, including Alabama and Florida, are also experiencing rises in cases.
