Trump: ‘I would have taken a tougher stand’ than Theresa May on Brexit negotiations

President Trump said in a new interview that he would have taken a “tougher stand” on Brexit negotiations than British Prime Minister Theresa May.

“Would it be the way I negotiate? No, I wouldn’t negotiate it the way it’s [being] negotiated … I would have had a different attitude,” Trump told ITV, Reuters reported.

{mosads}“I would have said the European Union is not cracked up to what it’s supposed to be,” Trump added, according to the news service. “I would have taken a tougher stand in getting out.”

Trump provided British TV host Piers Morgan, a former “Celebrity Apprentice” winner, with an exclusive interview while visiting Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum.

The interview is slated to air Sunday evening.

The president won the 2016 election several months after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a decision that became known as “Brexit.”  Trump and his supporters often seized on the parallels between Brexit and the real estate mogul’s campaign.

Trump last week insisted his relationship with May is “really great,” pushing back on what he called a “false rumor” of tensions between the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

“We’re on the same wavelength, I think, in every respect,” Trump said during a meeting with May at the World Economic Forum. “Some people don’t necessarily believe that.”

Trump and May have sparred publicly during the last year over counterterrorism strategies and intelligence leaks. Trump has also publicly clashed with British officials.
