Poll: 37 percent ‘dismayed’ at Boris Johnson becoming U.K.’s Conservative Party leader

Thirty-seven percent of United Kingdom residents felt “dismayed” at Boris Johnson winning the Conservative Party leadership contest on Tuesday, according to a YouGov poll released Tuesday after the results were announced. 

He is set to become prime minister on Wednesday.

While 37 percent of respondents felt “dismayed,” 10 percent felt “disappointed.” The poll found 18 percent were “pleased” and 10 percent were “delighted” at Johnson’s win. Eight percent said they “don’t know” how they feel. 

The survey polled 1,730 British adults on Tuesday. The results are weighted to be representative of the country’s population. 

Johnson, the former foreign secretary, beat out Jeremy Hunt by nearly 50,000 votes. 

According to YouGov’s poll, 37 percent of British citizens surveyed said Johnson should call for an early general election and 43 percent said they don’t think he should call for the election. 

The survey also found that 51 percent feel Johnson should give Hunt a position in the Cabinet, and only 14 percent felt he should not. 

An ardent Brexit supporter, Johnson will take the helm at negotiations failed under Prime Minister Theresa May. She had inherited the deal after former Prime Minister David Cameron resigned when the referendum vote ended in favor of leaving the European Union.
