British Prime Minister Boris Johnson slammed “disgraceful” attacks on police officers that transpired during protests over a new policing bill.

Johnson’s remarks came on Saturday following the protests, which turned violent and resulted in 10 arrests, Reuters reported. Police told the outlet that poretesters launched glass bottles, eggs and bricks at them on Friday evening.

“Last night saw disgraceful attacks against police officers in Bristol. Our officers should not have to face having bricks, bottles and fireworks being thrown at them by a mob intent on violence and causing damage to property,” Johnson wrote in a tweet.

He also voiced his support for law enforcement who endured the attacks.

“The police and the city have my full support,” he wrote.

Several demonstrations have been held in Bristol protesting a bill that is currently going through British parliament and could result in law enforcement gaining new power to restrict protesting in the street, Reuters reported.

Two police officers were injured last Sunday as protests turned violent. At least two police cars were set on fire, as well.

Local law enforcement reported that Friday’s protests garnered nearly 1,000 participants, despite COVID-19 restrictions in the country that currently limit large gatherings, according to the outlet.

“The majority of people acted peacefully, however, there was a minority who showed hostility to officers,” Bristol police commander Mark Runacres told Reuters. “Officers repeatedly encouraged people to disperse but once the atmosphere changed and people became physical it was necessary to take action.”
