83,000 new coronavirus cases reported in India

More than 83,000 new coronavirus cases were reported by health officials in India on Tuesday, increasing the country’s number of total infections to nearly 5 million.

According to The Associates Press, the nation’s coronavirus death toll stands at 80,776 after the addition of 1,000 new deaths on Tuesday. India has struggled to prevent the virus from spreading but has seen some success in treating cases. It now boasts the highest number of recovered patients in the world, at just under 4 million.

India’s numbers are not thought to accurately include all cases among the country’s migrant worker community, however. Many members of the country’s parliament, which reopened Monday, blamed those workers for spreading the virus to remote regions of the country after government officials instituted a lockdown in March, forcing many to move in search of work.

India still trails the U.S. in terms of total COVID-19 infections and deaths but has in recent weeks passed Brazil as the country with the second highest number of total cases. Brazilian officials had reported just more than 4.3 million total cases and 130,000 deaths as of Tuesday.

The U.S. is approaching 200,000 total deaths and more than 6.5 million total cases.

President Trump has insisted in recent weeks, including in newly released audio recordings of talks with journalist Bob Woodward, that the U.S. did everything it could to prevent the virus from spreading within its borders.

“Everything we did was right,” Trump said during a White House news briefing in April. “I’ve think I’ve educated a lot of people as to the press.”
