UK prime minister stresses Iran deal to Tillerson: report

British Prime Minister Theresa May emphasized the significance of the Iranian nuclear deal during a recent meeting with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

“[They] touched on the Iran nuclear deal, the PM underlining its importance in preventing Iran from procuring nuclear weapons,” a spokesman for May told Reuters.

The reported conversation comes as the Trump administration is said to be considering a more aggressive strategy toward Iran.

Tillerson, Secretary of Defense James Mattis and national security adviser H.R. McMaster assembled the proposal, which was presented to Trump in a National Security Council meeting last week.

{mosads}The proposal would reportedly allow the U.S. Navy to provide a more aggressive response to provocations by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, while also calling for more aggressive seizures of Iranian arms shipments meant for militant groups around the Middle East.

While the Trump administration in July certified that Iran is in compliance with the nuclear accord, which was negotiated to curb the country’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, it argued Iran is “in default of the spirit” of the agreement.

The administration said in July that it would utilize a broader approach to tackle Iran’s “malign activities” outside of the nuclear deal.
