Top NSC spox to step down

One of the White House’s top spokespeople on foreign policy and national security will be stepping down this week.

According to Politico, lead National Security Council (NSC) spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan will be departing the White House by the end of the week and returning to the foreign service.

{mosads}The move caps three years as a spokesperson for the national security arm of the White House, where she coordinated the administration’s messaging on a range of issues from Iranian nuclear talks to the fallout from the Arab Spring.

Before the NSC, she spent two years working in the State Department under then-Secretary Hillary Clinton. Meehan had also spent time as a foreign service officer in Colombia, Iraq and Dubai.

The Obama administration has been shaking up its communications team in recent weeks. In addition to Meehan, the State Department recently shuffled its department to make former Pentagon spokesman retired Rear Adm. John Kirby its chief spokesman. 

Meehan’s last day will be Thursday, Politico reported. A replacement has yet to be named.

Meehan did not immediately respond to an inquiry from The Hill.
