Former top diplomat calls for strategy, not ‘slogans,’ against ISIS

A former top State Department official who was an architect of the nuclear deal with Iran said Sunday that any strategy for fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) needs to be “multi-pronged,” adding that Democratic presidential candidates have articulated those types of policies.

{mosads}”I think the point today is that we have to be, actually as Secretary Clinton has said, about resolve, not about fear,” said former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“And the president, and quite frankly the Democratic candidates, have talked about a multi-pronged strategy. Not just slogans,” Sherman said.

“But a multi-pronged strategy that not only defeats ISIL but stops recruitment, stops financing of ISIL, makes sure that you take care of this not only for the immediate but for the long-term as well,” she added, using the administration’s preferred acronym for the terror group.

Some on the right accuse the Obama administration of having an inadequate strategy for fighting ISIS.

Sherman recently left the administration after helping to negotiate the nuclear accord with Iran. After her departure in October, she joined Harvard University’s Institute of Politics as a fellow.
