Mueller discussed January interview at Camp David with Trump’s legal team: report

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team reportedly discussed with President Trump’s lawyers the possibility of a Jan. 27 interview with the president, before negotiations came to a standstill.

CNN reported that the two sides discussed the possibility of conducting the interview at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.

The Jan. 27 date reported by CNN on Thursday would have come days after Trump told reporters that he was eager to sit down for an interview with Mueller’s team, which is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Mueller’s team has pressed for an interview with the president as investigators seek to determine whether Trump sought to obstruct the Russia probe after taking office last year.

Trump’s legal team has suggested that an interview with the president has become less likely, amid concerns that Mueller could use Trump’s own statements against him.

In a Jan. 29 letter to prosecutors, Trump’s legal team suggested that there were possible constitutional issues with having the president sit for an interview.

Still, the two teams have continued to discuss the possibility of an interview with Trump, and the president’s lawyers have pressed investigators to limit the scope of the questioning.
