Dem lawmaker blasts GOP for ‘stupid’ hearing on Clinton’s emails

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, blasted his Republican colleagues on Thursday for holding a “stupid” hearing to discuss the FBI’s probe into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.

“It is ridiculous and stupid we are having an emergency hearing into an investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails in 2016,” Lieu said at the televised committee hearing. “But since Republicans control the agenda, let’s at least try to have this stupid hearing be based on the facts.”

He said one of those facts is that the Justice Department’s inspector general concluded that “no personal views of any FBI or DOJ employee affected the integrity of the investigation.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein testified at Thursday’s hearing about government decision-making and conduct during the 2016 election.

Lieu noted that while GOP lawmakers are rehashing issues that arose two years ago, there are more immediate matters, like the Trump administration’s border policy, that warrant attention.

“It is now June 2018 and thousands of kids have been ripped away from their parents by the Trump administration’s child separation policy,” the California Democrat said.

Lieu’s remarks echoed those of other committee Democrats at the hearing.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, the top Democrat on the panel, criticized Republicans for focus on Clinton when they could be focusing on important issues like the family-separation crisis, election interference and the Trump administration’s conflicts of interest.
