US helicopters strike Syrian army checkpoint: report

Two U.S. helicopters attacked a Syrian army checkpoint on Monday, killing one soldier and injuring two others, Reuters reported

The attack was at a checkpoint in northeastern Syria near the Kurdish-held city of Qamishli, the newswire reported, citing state media.

State media said the incident happened shortly after a U.S. patrol was prevented from passing by an army checkpoint in the area, according to Reuters.

Northeastern Syria is mainly under control of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces spearheaded by Kurdish forces, but Syrian army forces are deployed throughout certain locations under agreements with the Kurds, Reuters noted.
