FTC delays identity theft rule again

Both the American Bar Association and the American Medical Association have lobbied for exemptions for their industries, and the rule has been delayed several times since its original November 2008 deadline. The FTC said the delays are because some industries still lack clarity over whether they are covered by the rule.

“As an agency we’re charged with enforcing the law, and endless extensions delay enforcement,” Leibowitz said.

The Commission urged Congress to quickly pass legislation that would clarify who is covered by the rule.
